This evening jacket is made of pure silk, with metallic thread woven right in, for a lovely ripple of texture that adds a touch of dazzle. The pattern is eye-catching, yet not overexuberant. This is a Limited Edition Global Fax Festival Binder created by David Hammons from the Global Fax Festival Event in Madrid in 2000.

This Limited Edition Binder is limited to an edition of 20.

The binder and packet contains a press packet, a brochure describing the concept of the Global Fax Festival, and a selection of examples of the faxes sent during the festival, selected by David Hammons.

The Global Fax Festival was an event conceptualized and created by David Hammons, an American artist. It was held at the Crystal Palace in Madrid, Spain from June 1st through November 6th, in 2000.

During the festival, faxes were sent from all over the world to fax machines hanging suspended from the ceiling at the Crystal Palace. At the festival, the papers being faxed were falling to the floor.

A full color brochure describes the location of the festival, as well as the concept behind it, engineered by David Hammons. This complete binder is very rare, as only 20 were produced. A CD is included with the binder packet, which contains music from the Global Fax Festival.

David Hammons was born in 1943 in Springfield, Illinois. He is an African American artist known primarily for his works in and around New York City.

Many of his works center around racial themes.

David Hammons is a part of the civil rights and Black Power movements in the United States.

Thai Varick "Bull" Heavy Gauge Copper Wire Sculpture

This sculpture is made from Copper Wire. This piece measures 12" high, 18" long, and 6" deep.

Thai Varick lived and worked on the streets of New York City, selling his wire creations. This sculpture measures 12" hgh, 18" long, and 6" deep. The sculpture's single piece of wire, which begins at the back hoof, ends in a small heart at the center of the bull's chest.

Thai Varick is the nickname for Louis Gladding Varick V. In 2000, Thai was 59, and had been homeless for ten years. He lived in various men's shelters around New York City, and sold his wire creations on the streets to passersby and tourists. He has slept on the streets, in subway cars, and various other places, including staying at the home of his sister on occasion. He was unusual among the homeless in that he is an incredibly talented sculptor. These metal sculptures that he created, such as the one listed here, are all that kept him surviving.

He purchased the wire for his sculptures in hardware stores, and he sold his pieces on the streets, in galleries, and at art fairs. He also sold some of the pieces he made at a local bar and grill on 79th Street. His artwork is popular among collectors of American Folk Art, and he has been mentioned in several folk art encyclopedias.

Mr. Varick was a New Yorker all of his life. He spent his early years in Queens and Brooklyn, growing up first in a public housing project, and later in a home in Brooklyn. His father was a police officer, and his mother was the owner of a hat store. Later, he married and had a child, whom he supported doing all sorts of odd jobs around New York Cty. His life began to take a turn for the worse when he inadvertently assisted in a bank robbery as the getaway driver, for which he was incarcerated for five years. It was during this time in prison that he discovered his talent. While in prison, he created plaques for the guards that the warden sold for him, and gave him the proceeds after he was released.

Years later, he became involved with a woman in New York, and opened several art galleries while creating African masks and other woodworks, as well as teaching classes to others. He was also at this time employed as an ironworked, from which he contracted lead poisoning. He was later hospitalized for this illness. It was some time after his girlfriend died of pneumonia that he became homeless. His many friends in New York, as well as his family, help him when they can, and he dreamed one day of being able to find an apartment and open up new galleries.

Unfortunately, around the time of the articles mentioned above, Thai Varick passed away. He was an incredible sculptor, able to create beautiful creatures from simply a piece of wire.

Avshalom Eitan was born January 20, 1948, in Tel-Adashim, Palestine into a family of pioneering first generation Israeli farmers. His grandfather was among the founders of the Israeli Army. His father was a high ranking police officer, taking his son along with him on occasional border excursions. At the age of sixteen, he and his family moved to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. There he was influenced by local artists, whose paintings of native people and local scenes show an influence in his works today. Two years later, he was drafted into the Israeli Army, where he served for three years in a paratrooper unit.

In 1973, Avshalom came to New York City to study at the School of Visual Arts, majoring in graphic design and illustration. Avshalom graduated from SVA in 1976, with a B.F.A., and then continued his education at NYU, where he earned his Master€™s in 1976 in Painting and Sculpture. He has since participated in major group exhibitions in New York, as well as solo shows in North Carolina. In 1982, he moved to Israel, to the artist colony of Ein-Hod.

Avshalom returned to New York in 1986, where he established a Gallery/Studio at his residence in the city. There, his works are on exhibit, along with the works of other local artists. He works in many different media, using his innovative technique of mixed media and collage. Avshalom€™s works are full of vibrant color and expressive drawing. His illustrations appear full of life. Most of his original illustrations are works on paper, with pen & ink, watercolor, colored pencils, oil sticks, gesso, and collage.

Elling Reitan was born in Trondheim, Norway, in 1949. Elling Reitan is considered one of Norway€™s leading contemporary artists, and his artwork is in high demand in Norway. He was nominated as Nobel Artist of the Year in 2000. His works contain imagery of Christian symbols, as well as imagery from Greek mythology. His inspirations for his paintings often stem from dream symbology and fantasy life. Elling studied under one of Norway€™s most internationally celebrated painters, Odd Nerdrum. Elling went on to create a style of painting that was uniquely his own, which has been rare among artists studying under Nerdrum.

Elling€™s exhibiting career began late in his life, in the 1990's. He has exhibited in several galleries in New York City, as well as other galleries internationally. He has exhibited in the Gallery Westwood in Manhattan.

Elling Reitan€™s works are often surrealistic, with elements of abstraction and naturalism. He uses bold and beautiful colors to describe his artistic vision. Abstract landscapes burning with bright reds and greens are found within his paintings, which for the most part, are lively and vibrant, with deep colors.

This is a beautiful Hand Painted Icon from the 18th Century.

This wood icon was created and hand painted in the 1700s, and depicts scenes from the life of Christ

The Icon was made specifically for home devotion. It resided in a monastery in New York until this year.

Scenes depicted include the Annunciation, the Birth of Christ, the Baptism by St. John, the Last Supper, and the Ascension. This panel shows the complete life of Christ. The colors are vibrant and bright, still beautiful due to great care being taken of this piece. The wood itself shows some darkening with age, but the pictures are still lovely.

This is a beautiful depiction of scenes from the Life of Christ, and with proper care, will last for many more years. The size is 12" x 10 1/2". This item comes with a small metal stand, to display the icon beautifully in your home.

Monogrammed with a typical "C" monogram on each plate.

Made circa 1896-1925

Simple and elegant early 20th century design.

The plates have some light wear and minor scratches. No dents, dings, or repairs.

Each of the 12 plates measures 6 1/2" diameter. The total weight of sterling silver for these plates is 2.45 pounds.

These plates came in a Tiffany flannel bag, and were made by Woodside Sterling Co, in New York, a company which no longer exists.

Manhattan native Alex Beard is a painter, writer, and traveler and has emerged as one of his generation's most creative and successful artists. Alex's work has been shown in one-man exhibitions in New Orleans, Los Angeles, New York, Hong Kong, and many places in between. His drawings and paintings are scattered in private collections from Japan to the West Indies and are in museum permanent collections and on public and private walls around the world.

In 1995, he began a ten year stint in New Orleans where he studied at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art, opened a gallery in the French Quarter, married and became a father. In 2006, Alex returned to his roots in Manhattan and opened the Alex Beard Studio in SoHo.

Alex Beard's pieces have many different influences. As he states in an interview in the Times-Picayune in 2008, "All the whimsy, all the color, and a good bit of the oddity come from New Orleans." His paintings and drawings are overflowing with bright colors and fantastical creatures.

Illustrations on each leg by Starling Designs. Painstakingly Hand-Painted with extreme attention to detail, these jeans are beautiful and eye-catching! Jewelry surviving 911 WTC World Trade Center tragedy

This is jewelry that survived the intense heat of 9-11-2001, located inside of a JP Morgan Chase Safety Deposit Box at the World Trade Center, as well as ALL documentation photographed below.

Includes 6 Pieces of Jewelry: Chevron Necklace, Tapered Ladies Bracelet, Gold Wedding Band, Victorian Bar Pin, Synthetic Plum Sapphire Ring, and a Touremline ByPass Ring with 4 Diamonds.

Not many artifacts survived 9-11 intact, and NO EVIDENCE was allowed to be removed by ground zero cleanup crews. Therefore, very fews items from that fateful day survive. These items were damaged in the intense heat, but did survive nearly intact.

Documentation proving provenance is included with purchase, as well as signed and Notarized statement from Safety Deposit Box owner. These items have been appraised by David Wolf Associates, at the request of JP Morgan Chase Bank.

Starting with the Synthetic Plum Sapphire Ring: This synthetic gem in this piece was a lighter color, however, the intense heat of the fires changed the stone's color to a darker, deeper shade of plum, while initially lighter pink. This is unusual and seems symbolic; changing state as a direct result of the 9-11 tragedy, a unique remembrance, akin to how the events of that day changed us all as a nation. This ring was made in Russia. 14 Karat Pink Gold, stamped with 583 Russian mark. 1.o4 ct weight; light L1. This item survived nearly intact, with only slight metallic frosting.

The Green Tourmaline Ring was purchased in Brazil, during a trip taken there by the Box Owner's father, back in the 1960s. This piece is 1.9 dwt 14 ct yellow gold, emerald cut faceted tourmalines from Brazil (possibly Minas Garias, though uncertain) .55 ct each, with an L1 clarity. This item survived nearly intact, with only slight metallic frosting. The 4 diamonds are .015 cts each, clarity is VS1.

The Tri-Color Gold Chevron Necklace suffered more extensive damage, as is bent from high heat in areas, and, according to the appraiser, "will not take a shine." It is 15" long, and is a V necklace. The tapered bracelet matches the necklace, 7.5" long, woven mesh design.

The wedding Band is gold with milling on the face, and is also damaged, and is "borderline ploish to restore." 5.9 mm wide, size 6 3/4.

The Victorian Bar Pin is 14K yellow gold with a silver top. It is hand contructed, and has a bead and bright cut setting. The diamond in the center weighs .34 ct, L1 clarity with a G-H-I color. Slight black debris around the diamond. The diamond melee are .03 - .01 cts each, for a total weigh of .80 ct, with 34 diamonds. SIX have popped out from the intense heat, five are loose, one remains missing. One of the smaller diamonds has changed coolor to a more yellow shade. Their SI clarity, with a color of F-G-H. This item was handmade in Russia, during the 19th centurty, and s purchased during the Soviet era. The bar pin is bent slightly.

These items are some of the few surviving artifacts from the 9-11 tragedy, as many other safety deposit boxes were melted beyond the point of opening. Please see the photos of the actual safety deposit box below. (A copy of these images are also included in this auction.)

The items had been appraised in early 2002, and value refects rare metal pricing at the time, as well as workmanship. 'Historical value' was not a factor in the appraisal.

Please consider the sensitive nature of the items. The Box owner had formerly worked at WTC I and her company had transferred down the street only a year or so before the tragedy. The owner would rather sell the items and move on than keep them, as too many sad memories are attached to them. If you have any questions, please direct them with sensitivity and concern.
