This is an Empire Style Leather Top Console/
Writing Desk.
The Console has curved legs and Ormolu details. The top of the
console is a green leather with wood at the edges.
Made in France, circa 1830.
This Writing Desk/ Console measures 24 1/2" high, 7"
front to back, and 30 1/2" wide
This type of desk is very rare, as the ormolu technique was not
used after 1830. Ormolu is a gilding process using a high karat
gold amalgamated with mercury, used for decorative details on wood
and other materials. It was soon discovered that using mercury in
this manner was harmful, and it was discontinued. Likely few of
these types of desks survived, making this desk a very rare find!
The Empire Style was an early 19th Century design style originating
in the period of Napoleon I's leadership of France.
