This is a Kota or Bakota fetish from the region of Gabon.

The peoples of Gabon called the Bakota were a peaceful people. They moved during the 18th century to their current homeland in Gabon. When Christian missionaries arrived, many of their sacred objects were destroyed, buried, or otherwise lost.

The religion of the Bakota peoples held ancestors in high esteem, and believed that they continued to influence the living after their death. They would place relics or magical objects into handmade baskets, and create a figure from wood and metal to place atop the baskets. The figures were called guardian figures.

The basket and figure offered here is called a fetish, and consists of a guardian figure atop a basket. The carved figure is made of copper or brass on top of wood.

This is a contemporary or modern Kota Fetish, from about the 20th century. The figure is 17" tall, with the head comprising 7" of that height. The width from knee to knee is 5". The diameter of the basket is 11", and the basket is 5 1/2" high.
