African ANTIQUE Ethiopian Headrest Carved Wood Genuine

Antique Ethiopian Headrest made of Wood in Africa

This is a Genuine Headrest crafted by peoples of Ethiopia.

The men, and sometimes the women, in Ethiopian culture generally elaborately style their hair in a manner which defines certain characteristics about themselves, including their social status. They craft these headrests so that the elaborate hairstyles are preserved during sleep.

This headrest is 50 years old, is contemporary, and was used by peoples of Ethiopia.

The headrest measures 5 3/4" high at the center, 6 7/8" high at the two sides. The width of the base is 5", and the center of the headrest's width is 3". The width of the center of the base is 3 1/2", and the center piece is 3 3/4" high. The wood pieces at the side are 6" high.

The design of this headrest is simple and elegant. The base is carved with several concentric rings around, with what appear to be leaf design carvings in between several of the rings. Two long wood pieces at the sides connect the base to the headrest piece across the top. Below the headpiece is what appears to be a stylized representation of the waist and legs of a person standing upright.
